OnePlus Two - First Impressions

Today was a good day, it was a new phone day. Less than 36 hours after completing my order for the OnePlus Two, to my surprise a DHL van pulled up outside! I also own a OnePlus One (hereby referred to as One) and have, for the most part, been pretty happy with it - except for the touchscreen firmware issues which plagued the device. Needless to say I was pretty excited by the OnePlus Two when it was announced. Buying one OnePlus are still operating the invite system for this device. I

The Final Leg - Rome

I'm writing this back in England having had a few days to postulate on our trip. My intention is to write up our experiences in the Balkans in a separate post that'll let you know the bits we really liked and the bits that were meh. Anyway back to this post, Rome. On our honeymoon we spent several days in Rome and did the "Caeser shuffle" then. We only had the day here before our flight at 9pm. After we'd had a lie in that was quickly reduced to half! I've always been fascinated by the Roma

Dubrovnik to Rome

Day 11. We're very much on the homeward leg of our holiday now leaving Dubrovnik behind today. This morning I walked to a nearby bakery and bought some pastries and juice. The view from our apartment was so good it seemed a waste not to use it. Again we have Airbnb to thank for this cracking place and I've generally been delighted with the quality of the accommodation on this trip. We were queueing for a shuttle bus to the Airport when an agent appeared in a silver minibus. He shouted at

Crossing the border - Kotor to Dubrovnik

Day 10. Today we said goodbye to Montenegro and our hire car. We covered around 900km in that car and I reckon the 1.0 engine is still gasping for air! This meant the beginning of our epic trip home via Dubrovnik, then Rome tomorrow and finally to Luton on Tuesday evening. The hire car had to be returned to Tivat airport for 10am but the next bus to Dubrovnik wasn't until 15.40 in a town called Herceg Novi. Getting to Herceg Novi with no a car wasn't without it's challenges! We took a taxi

The Bay of Kotor, Lovćen and Cetinje

Day 9. Our final full day in Montenegro and one I've been saving till last. We are staying just outside the old town of Kotor and started the day by having breakfast, croissant bought from a local pekara (bakery), on the shores of the fjord. As I took this a local remarked (in English!) that it was a nice view. Understatement of the week! The shore of the lake between Kotor and Tivat was just one long traffic jam for us. The road was barely single track in places and if you got it wrong t

Montenegro: Mountains to Coast in 2 hours

Day 8. Today was relatively quiet day as "all we did" was drive from Žablajak in the North to the Bay of Kotor in the South via Podgorica and Budva. 1500m above to sea level in such a short drive was a pretty great example of the diversity of this country. The image above is the centre of the country. A mix of wide, flattish plains punctuated by glacial deposits (spot the drumlins) with the mountains providing a backdrop which borders on the ordinary it is so common here. It is of course no

Durmitor National Park

Day 7. Žabljak is perfectly situated to explore the National Park of Durmitor, so we decided not to... only kidding. I seem to say the same thing every day, that this country gets more and more beautiful. Today it definitely did. We were up early, something to do with the sunlight pouring in through our curtainless apartment window. We'd eaten breakfast purchased from a local bakery by 9am and headed to the Black Lake. We tried 3 mountain bike hire shops but alas, there were no extra small mod

Tara Canyon and Žablajak

Day 6. We left Kolašin (pronounced Collar-shin) this morning in beautiful sunshine at around 25C, it felt like a perfect British summers day. I got a picture of the little wooden bridge we had to cross to get to our hotel, not sure it'd fly in the EU! We headed North once again up E80 towards Mojkovac this time taking the left turn towards Žablajak (pronounced Zj-ab-yak). Our route took us along a stunning canyon carved by the River Tara. Cat took this pic. We saw a sign for a monaster

Biogradska Gora

Day 5. Time to start exploring the mountains around Kolašin. First, breakfast though. The centre of town isn't very big. There are only around 6,000 inhabitants according to the Montenegrin tourist board. The economy here is yet to succumb to large chains, bakeries are where you buy bread and butchers = meat. I've never experienced this in England and is one of the biggest differences here. We bought some delicious looking sausage (well, they almost all are) and some eggs. I had to get a pictu

Podgorica to Kolašin

This morning we said goodbye to Podgorica and collected our hire car. After a swift 6.5km trip in a taxi to the airport to collect the motor (for only 6EUR) we stopped off at a local supermarket to gather provisions for the day ahead. Our plan was to drive the 80km with an estimated journey time of just over an hour. Me being me decided to take the scenic route, and boy was it ever... Before we left Podgorica though we drove right past its Cathedral. I can't think of any of other city I'v

The Belgrade to Bar Train

The train from Belgrade to Bar at the Montenegrin coast is apparently the most famous scenic train ride you've probably never heard of. Well I suppose you have now technically heard of it. It's apparently one of those rail journeys you absolutely must do before you die and features on top 10s everywhere. This train takes around 12 hours (on the official timetable) to complete this journey. The entire reason we flew to Belgrade was to do this trip, so let's go! There's not that much informat

Belgrade - A City in transition

This post is part of a series encompassing our 2015 summer holiday to the Balkans. We spent Friday 14th August (happy birthday Mum!) in Belgrade, a city with much more to offer than the guidebooks led me to believe. The first full day of our holiday began. After a delicious buffet breakfast, which was included in our room rate we headed towards Belgrade railway station to purchase our tickets to Podgorica, Montenegro the following day. We walked for around 15 minutes down a steep hill before f

The Beginning of the Balkan Adventure

The is the first post in a series where I will describe our 2015 summer holiday across the Balkans. First impressions are a weird mix of communist hangovers and modern western, capitalist influences. Luton - Belgrade We flew to Serbia using the Hungarian airline Wizz Air. Their staff could use some lessons in diplomacy both in the air and on the ground. I will probably avoid these guys if I can in future! Our flight time was 2hrs 30mins but due to some thunderstorms in the vicinity of the a

Under the sea!

It is perhaps fitting that tonights final honeymoon blog post comes to you from the comfort of a train. We’re back in England and headed for Norwich to meet Catherine’s parents where we will be reunited with our darling little Robbie Dog! 4 weeks ago when I booked this train from London - Norwich the upgrade fee from 2nd to 1st class was… 20p. So, we’re sat in 1st class enjoying the free wifi and extra spacious (for England anyway) seats. I reckon these seats are about as spacious as your avera

The Most Expensive Coke

Good evening everybody! So, it has come. The final night abroad. Thank you all so much for reading whilst we’ve been away - all the emails have been really positive and I think you’ve all had fun reading. I know I’ve certainly had fun writing these posts, and it saves a lot of explaining to you all over the coming weeks! You were there, with us! This morning we pulled into Paris on the second of our two sleeper trains. It took a grand 15 hours from Berlin meaning we arrived at 11.15am. It took

Berlin Biking Brilliance

This post is brought to in association with Starbucks “providing travellers the world over, with free unlimited wifi!”. Of all the places we’ve visited Berlin is my favourite. The air is clean. The sun was shining. It wasn’t too hot or too cold. The people have all been lovely. The public transport works. The traffic is quieter than you could imagine for a capital city. But best of all, you feel safe. Everywhere we’ve gone - and we’ve gone all over the city in the last 2 days, we’ve felt as saf

Munich to Berlin Sleeper Train

We both found the whole concept of going to sleep in Munich but waking up in Berlin really quite cool. The only problem with this particular sleeper train was that it left at 10pm and arrived at 7am. Meaning we had a very short amount of sleep. That = two tired honeymooners tonight! I think Cat got on better with the sleeper train better than I did. She slept like a log and I think I managed about 4 hours - still, try again tomorrow night when we head to Paris for the final leg of our tour. Tod

Innsbruck - Munich

Feeling very cosmopolitan as I write this post tonight… Sat in Munich Hauptbahnhof drinking a Starbucks and leeching off their free wifi for the next 2 hours until our sleeper train to Berlin. We’ve had a lovely day today - quite stress free and it got off to a good start. The hotel we stayed at last night had a pool on the top floor which over looked the Tirol valley - and at 7.30am there was nobody in it which is always better than company. So after our refreshing dip in the pool, it was time

Innsbruck

Innsbruck is a lovely place and Austria has welcomed us with a mistake in our favour! The hotel accidentally confused my current booking with my old cancelled one (for the same hotel, only a more expensive room). At check-in, they put us in the more expensive room only realising after they’d done so. Meaning, we get a palatial sized room (with sofa, and lounge area) for the cost of a standard! WIN WIN! To add to that, the housekeeping staff had folded our bedding into a heart shape (I put honeym

Arrivéderci Italia!

So far, so good today….! We will be in Innsbruck for half 4 now!! Our final Italian train arrived into Bologna a traditional 17 minutes late which still left us a good 10-15 minutes to find our Austrain bound transport. We stepped onto the platform, number 8 incidentally, and there awaiting us was a gleaming White GERMAN train! Hallelujah!! On board we found some seats and they are enormous! Enough room to spread out. There is a good 4-6inches leg room even for my tree trunks!!! So long Italy

Challenge accepted!

Good morning chaps! We are back to the trains today. Our mission, if we choose to accept it: Travel 700km in one day using almost only public transport. Challenge accepted! (How I met your mother reference - it’s a tv show grandma!). Ok so we rolled out of bed just before Dawn at 6am this morning. Made ourselves some breakfast with bacon, eggs and cereal - accompanied by a truly beautiful sunrise. We packed up the remainder of things, said goodbye to the mouse and braved our way up the drivew

A lazy day

Found the sun loungers today! Lazily reading a book and lying in the soft evening sun, next to the pool. If we were any more relaxed we might start going backwards! We made a picnic salad and went for a drive up into the mountains today near Bolognola. We found a beautifully picturesque spot to eat our grub - complete with picnic tables. We are all set for the final week of our European Grand Tour now. Washing is all but done and dry. Bodies are recharged. Sleep has been gotten in generous qu
