Crossing the border - Kotor to Dubrovnik

Day 10. Today we said goodbye to Montenegro and our hire car. We covered around 900km in that car and I reckon the 1.0 engine is still gasping for air! This meant the beginning of our epic trip home via Dubrovnik, then Rome tomorrow and finally to Luton on Tuesday evening. The hire car had to be returned to Tivat airport for 10am but the next bus to Dubrovnik wasn't until 15.40 in a town called Herceg Novi. Getting to Herceg Novi with no a car wasn't without it's challenges! We took a taxi

The Bay of Kotor, Lovćen and Cetinje

Day 9. Our final full day in Montenegro and one I've been saving till last. We are staying just outside the old town of Kotor and started the day by having breakfast, croissant bought from a local pekara (bakery), on the shores of the fjord. As I took this a local remarked (in English!) that it was a nice view. Understatement of the week! The shore of the lake between Kotor and Tivat was just one long traffic jam for us. The road was barely single track in places and if you got it wrong t

Montenegro: Mountains to Coast in 2 hours

Day 8. Today was relatively quiet day as "all we did" was drive from Žablajak in the North to the Bay of Kotor in the South via Podgorica and Budva. 1500m above to sea level in such a short drive was a pretty great example of the diversity of this country. The image above is the centre of the country. A mix of wide, flattish plains punctuated by glacial deposits (spot the drumlins) with the mountains providing a backdrop which borders on the ordinary it is so common here. It is of course no

Durmitor National Park

Day 7. Žabljak is perfectly situated to explore the National Park of Durmitor, so we decided not to... only kidding. I seem to say the same thing every day, that this country gets more and more beautiful. Today it definitely did. We were up early, something to do with the sunlight pouring in through our curtainless apartment window. We'd eaten breakfast purchased from a local bakery by 9am and headed to the Black Lake. We tried 3 mountain bike hire shops but alas, there were no extra small mod

Tara Canyon and Žablajak

Day 6. We left Kolašin (pronounced Collar-shin) this morning in beautiful sunshine at around 25C, it felt like a perfect British summers day. I got a picture of the little wooden bridge we had to cross to get to our hotel, not sure it'd fly in the EU! We headed North once again up E80 towards Mojkovac this time taking the left turn towards Žablajak (pronounced Zj-ab-yak). Our route took us along a stunning canyon carved by the River Tara. Cat took this pic. We saw a sign for a monaster

Biogradska Gora

Day 5. Time to start exploring the mountains around Kolašin. First, breakfast though. The centre of town isn't very big. There are only around 6,000 inhabitants according to the Montenegrin tourist board. The economy here is yet to succumb to large chains, bakeries are where you buy bread and butchers = meat. I've never experienced this in England and is one of the biggest differences here. We bought some delicious looking sausage (well, they almost all are) and some eggs. I had to get a pictu

Podgorica to Kolašin

This morning we said goodbye to Podgorica and collected our hire car. After a swift 6.5km trip in a taxi to the airport to collect the motor (for only 6EUR) we stopped off at a local supermarket to gather provisions for the day ahead. Our plan was to drive the 80km with an estimated journey time of just over an hour. Me being me decided to take the scenic route, and boy was it ever... Before we left Podgorica though we drove right past its Cathedral. I can't think of any of other city I'v

The Belgrade to Bar Train

The train from Belgrade to Bar at the Montenegrin coast is apparently the most famous scenic train ride you've probably never heard of. Well I suppose you have now technically heard of it. It's apparently one of those rail journeys you absolutely must do before you die and features on top 10s everywhere. This train takes around 12 hours (on the official timetable) to complete this journey. The entire reason we flew to Belgrade was to do this trip, so let's go! There's not that much informat
